Everything you need to know about face oils
/Face oils have been gaining popularity in recent years and with so many options to choose from, how do you pick the right one for your skin type and skin concern?
Lucky for you, we have done our research and have put together everything you need to know about face oils and how to use them. More importantly, how can you incorporate face oils into your beauty regimen, even for those with oily, acne-prone skin.
What are face oils and how do I use them?
Face oils are generally used to hydrate your skin. They can originate from natural or synthetic forms and while there have been a lot of hype on the efficacy of face oils, it’s important to note that not all face oils are created equal.
Synthetic and mineral oils are comedogenic, which means they can clog pores, while naturally derived, plant oils when properly extracted won’t clog pores and can really make a difference to your skin.
To use face oil as a base for your moisturiser, apply a few drops to clean, damp skin and massage gently into your face. This is recommended to be done before applying moisturiser.
Can a face oil replace moisturisers?
Face oils are meant to complement moisturisers and not mean to replace them. As an oil, they don’t contain any water and therefore do not actually serve to moisturise. But face oils can help to nourish, lubricate and form a protective barrier on the skin’s surface to keep water in.
Can I pair face oil with a serum?
Yes definitely, and it’s recommended that you apply the skincare products in this order, serum, face oil and moisturiser. Argan, squalane (not squalene) and jojoba oils are great options as they absorb well into the skin and are non-comedogenic.
What can face oils do for my skin?
Face oils being rich in essential fatty acids can help to balance oily skin types by restoring essential fatty acids and providing hydration without any greasy residue. Face oils can also help to strengthen and repair our natural skin barrier, giving that much desired plumpness and suppleness.
What are some key oils to look for?
In general, it helps to look for face oils rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins A and C, lycopene, beta carotene and antioxidants. If you’re new to face oils and these words sound foreign to you, start with a single ingredient natural oil, such as rosehip, seabuckthorn and black seed. Rosehip oil is very accessible and easily found in any beauty shop, and is popular for its hydrating properties that absorbs quickly into skin. Plus it works well for all skin types.
Do look for facial oils that are organic and unrefined, so look for key phrases on the packaging like ‘certified organic’ or ‘free from preservatives and fillers’.
